Synopsis

At the 2004 Awards, for the first time ever, the Best Director winner did not go on to win Best Film. Martin Scorsese won Best Director for The Aviator, while Million Dollar Baby won Best Film of 2004.

Jamie Foxx was named Best Actor for Ray, consistent with the Academy Awards and other award shows, but in an unexpected upset for Hilary Swank, Annette Bening received the award for Best Actress for her performance in Being Julia – the film’s only nomination.

Two films and four actors were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Reflecting the quirkiness of Cosmo voters, Harold and Maude and The Women were both inducted into the Best Film of All Time Hall of Fame. Audrey Hepburn and Jack Lemmon were each named to the Acting Hall of Fame, while Charlie Chaplin and Lucille Ball were inducted into the Comedic Acting Hall of Fame.

In the new category for Best LGBTQ Film, Eating Out was a surprise winner, beating several other films that enjoyed significantly better distribution. The film’s theatrical run at the Castro Theatre a week before balloting closed was cited as an instrumental factor in its success.

In 2004, we also introduced three music-related categories: Best Original Song (won by “America, Fuck Yeah” from Team America: World Police), Best Score (won by The Aviator), and Best Soundtrack (won by Garden State). All were retired the following year, but two were revived and mashed together in 2017 as Best Score or Soundtrack.

The award for Favorite Cinematic Guilty Pleasure was also added this year, and Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle was the inaugural winner.
