Synopsis

Given the franchise’s strong Cosmo history and the film’s sweep at the Academy Awards, it was probably inevitable that The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King would dominate the 2003 Awards. The film received a record 26 nominations, winning 12 awards including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Drama.

Like Richard Gere the year before, both Scarlett Johannson and Ellen Degeneres received Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nominations for the same roles in Lost in Translation and Finding Nemo, respectively. And interestingly enough, while the both lost Best Actress (to Charlize Theron for Monster), they ended up tying for Best Supporting Actress.

Casablanca, Meryl Streep, and Robert De Niro were all named to the Hall of Fame. In addition, responding to criticism that comedic performances are often overlooked, the Cosmos created special Best Comedic Actress and Actor Halls of Fame, with Madeline Kahn and Peter Sellers as the first inductees.

The Cosmos have given awards to villains since the beginning of the awards. This year, we decided it was time to honor heroes, too, and decided to create separate male and female categories (won by Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Miranda Otto for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, respectively). And since the heroic category was separated by sex, we needed to do the same for Villains (won respectively by Andy Serkis for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Charlize Theron for Monster).

A short-lived category was added to the awards: Best Trailer (won by Big Fish). It was used again in the 2004 awards and then retired.
