Synopsis

Parasite, the South Korean thriller, won Best Picture at the 2019 Cosmique Movie Awards, along with Best Director for writer/director Bong Joon-ho, mirroring the film’s performance at the Academy Awards.

It also won Best Drama, which often predicts the Best Picture winner.

Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for Joker and Brad Pitt won Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood, also mirroring the Oscars. But in an unexpected departure, Scarlett Johansson won Best Actress for Marriage Story and Toni Collette won Supporting Actress for Knives Out. The Oscars went to Renee Zellweger for Judy and Laura Dern for Marriage Story, who were both nominated at the Cosmos but did not win.

Knives Out also won Best Script and Best Ensemble.

No films dominated the awards this year. Rocketman won four awards, the most of any film this year, including Best Costume Design and Make-Up, Best LGBTQ Film, Best Musical Film, and Best Soundtrack or Score. Five films tied for second place with three awards each: Knives Out, Midsommar, Parasite, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Under the Silver Lake.

Little Woman, which received 11 nominations, more than any other film, was shut out and did not receive any awards. It’s the second-largest shutout in Cosmo history after The Departed in 2006, which lost all 12 of its nominations.

The Talented Mr. Ripley was inducted into the Best Films of All Time Hall of Fame. Madeline Kahn, who was the first inductee into the Best Comedic Actresses Hall of Fame back in 2004, was inducted into the Best Actresses Hall of Fame, while Sidney Poitier was inducted into the corresponding Best Actors Hall of Fame. First time nominees Eileen Brennan and John Ritter were both inducted into the respective Best Comedic Actresses and Actors Halls of Fame. Poitier, who was born in 1927 before any of the other inductees, is the only living inductee this year. He is 93.
