Join us in remembering those in the film industry who passed away in 2019, including two Cosmo nominees: Doris Day and Albert Finney.
Doris Day passed away on May 13 at the age of 97. In 1960, she received an Oscar nomination for Pillow Talk, for which her co-star Rock Hudson won a Cosmo for Best Performance by a Gay Man Portraying a Straight Man. When the Hall of Fame award for Best Comedic Actresses of All Time was created for the 2003 Awards, she was one of the first nominees. She went on to be renominated for the award four more times.
Albert Finney passed away on February 7th at the age of 82. He received five Oscar nominations over his career. At the Cosmos, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Big Fish in 2003.
Danny Aiello never received an individual Cosmo nomination, but shares in the Best Ensemble Cast of All Time nomination for Ready to Wear (Prêt-à-Porter). He passed away on December 12th at the age of 86. Similarly, Rip Taylor, who passed away on October 6th at 88, shares in the ensemble nomination for Jackass: Number Two.
Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in five Star Wars films, passed away on April 30 at the age of 74. Though he doesn’t share in an ensemble nomination, four of the five Star Wars films he was in collectively received 29 Cosmo nominations. (The fifth, Return of the Jedi, predated the Cosmos and hasn’t received any Lifetime Achievement nominations.)
Film director Stanley Donen passed away on February 21 at the age of 94. He directed Singin’ in the Rain, which with The Wizard of Oz, was named Best Musical of All Time at the first Cosmique Movie Awards. Robert Evans, who produced Chinatown — a seven-time Cosmo nominee for Best Films Hall of Fame — passed away on October 26th at 89.
So many others who may not have had a Cosmo connection yet also passed away this year: Carol Channing, Luke Perry, Valerie Harper, Katherine Helmond, Tim Conway, Georgia Engel, Rutger Hauer, and so many others.
