Trailer: Dune

Though Dune won’t release until October 22, 2021, the initial critical reviews of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel suggests that it may turn out to be a blockbuster hit.

On Rotten Tomatoes, 85% of critics are giving it a positive review (as of September 4th).

The new “Dune” should be a smash hit. It’s a big old epic, the kind we need right now, to sweep us away from viruses, hurricanes, and wars in real life.

Paying homage to the philosophical sci-fi of Herbert as well as Isaac Asimov and Stanislaw Lem, Villeneuve has conjured an epic on a gargantuan scale that dwarfs even his own earlier work.

Villeneuve clearly knows how to handle a sci-fi, but he also brings a gentle rawness to the film, that isn’t all visual stunts and CGI. Some scenes are stripped back to the bare basics, and the solid cast are able to keep you enthralled.

Given how rapidly the 1984 adaptation was panned, it’s encouraging to hear early acclaim for the new adaptation that stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, and Zendaya as Chani. Here’s a quick peek at some of the trailers:
