Favorite LGBTQ Films Dealing with AIDS
For a time, it appeared that LGBTQ films only dealt with the themes of coming out or dying of AIDS. It shouldn’t be forgotten, though, that there was a time when AIDS was a taboo subject and these films were instrumental in exposing the horror of AIDS to a broader audience.

Favorite Films Dealing with LGBTQ Romance & Relationships
For too long in cinematic history, gay characters had to be neutered. They could be the wise-cracking friend or the lonely neighbor, but actually experiencing sex, love, and romance? That was too far. In time, we finally got to see gay characters hook up, date, form relationships, and even marry.
Buzzworthy: Beach Rats (2017) • The Birdcage (1996) • Bound (1996) • Bridegroom (2013) • Brokeback Mountain (2005) • Call Me by Your Name (2017) • Carol (2015) • The Danish Girl (2015) • Desert Hearts (1985) • Disobedience (2018) • Dog Day Afternoon (1975) • Holding the Man (2016) • I Love You, Philip Morris (2010) • The Kids Are All Right (2010) • Latter Days (2004) • Longtime Companion (1989) • Love Is Strange (2014) • Love, Simon (2018) • Making Love (1982) • Maurice (1987) • My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) • Parting Glances (1986) • Personal Best (1981) • Philadelphia (1993) • Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) • The Prom (2020) • Rocketman (2019) • Shortbus (2006) • A Single Man (2009) • The Wedding Banquet (1993)
Favorite Queer-Coded LGBTQ Films
Queer coding is the subtextual coding of a character in media as queer. Though such a character’s sexual identity may not be explicitly confirmed within their respective work, a character might be coded as queer through the use of traits and stereotypes recognizable to the audience. Such traits are greatly varied, but traits of exaggerated masculinity and femininity, vanity, and hypersexuality are frequent. Queer coding is a concept both in the discussion of media portrayal of LGBT people and academic research involving queer theory or gender studies. The idea of non-explicit queer coding likely stems from the strict regulations of how queer characters were able to be portrayed in the early days of film-making. In 1930, The Hays Code was established as a standard for what was allowed to be shown on the big screen. According to the code, films were not allowed to portray “perverse” subjects such as homosexuality, which inevitably led to the portrayal of non-explicit queer characters. The trend of the inclusivity of queer characters in a subtextual way likely bled into modern portrayals of queer characters. Commentary on the treatment of LGBT+ characters in film is made in the 1995 documentary The Celluloid Closet and is one of the first instances in which the idea of queer coding is presented to the public.

Favorite LGBTQ Historical Films
Same-sex love and alternative forms of gender expression have existed throughout human history, even if modern terminology and concepts weren’t applied to those actions. Literature and cinema allow creators to explore the forbidden sexuality of real and fictional characters who experienced a “love that dare not speak its name.” The LGBTQ characters may be real historical people like Harvey Milk or Truman Capote, or of real historical events, but they could also be fictional characters set in a historically recognizable time period that shows what LGBTQ life was like in that period. These films should have been seen as “historical” at the time the film was released; an LGBTQ-themed film made in the 1970s might be of historical interest now but would have been seen as a contemporary story at the time it was released. The LGBTQ characters need not be the main characters, nor their story a central plot point, but they should be significant enough for the film.
